The National Academies invites you to register for this public release webinar of a new report on October 19 at 1:00-2:00 PM ET. The report, Current Methods for Life Cycle Analyses of Low-Carbon Transportation Fuels in the United States, assesses how current LCAs differ in their implementation, modeling approaches, data quality, and assumptions. The report contains information useful to both LCA practitioners and federal and state policymakers interested in applying LCA to low carbon fuel standards. It also describes specific fuel considerations for LCA of fossil fuels, hydrogen, biofuels, aviation and maritime fuels, and electricity. The committee briefing team will share key takeaways and respond to questions during the webinar. The report is now available for free download.

The committee will ask questions based on the pre-recorded presentation of Dr. Joule Bergerson from the University of Calgary (her presentation will be made available on the event website) and the live presentation of Dr. James Hileman from the Federal Aviation Administration.

At this meeting, which is part of the committee’s information gathering process, committee members will have a Q&A session with experts on land use change (US and international) and GHG emissions from low carbon transportation fuels; modeling land-use change and soil carbon implications from the production of low-carbon transportation fuels; and uncertainty stemming from the use of LCA for transportation fuels, indirect land use change estimation techniques, and the limits of LCA as it relates to fuel policy.

The committee will ask questions based on published papers of Dr. Richard Plevin, private consultant, as well as, pre-recorded presentations by Dr. Tyler Lark and Mr. Seth Spawn from the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment and Dr. John Field from the Bioresource Science & Engineering Group, Environmental Sciences Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

In this open session the committee will hear from a sponsor representative about study context and sponsor expectations from the study. In addition, federal and state agency representatives will each give a brief presentation about their work on assessment of GHG emissions from transportation fuels and comment on how the study and the committee’s report could be useful to them. After the presentations and Q&A with the speakers, there will be a 15-minute comment period for members of the public/stakeholders to comment on the committee’s task (2 minute maximum per commenter; preferably one speaker per organization). Members of the public who wish to be heard during the public comment period, should elect to do so when prompted during registration. Alternatively, if unable to comment due to time constraints all are welcome to send their comments or any written materials via e-mail (BEST@nas.edu) by 10:00 AM (ET) on June 1, 2021.
NOTE: Comments can be submitted at any time during the duration of the study by using the feedback form on the study’s website.
