About

The use of medical diagnostic procedures has benefited the care of most patients. However, it is accompanied by growing concerns about the risks associated with diagnostic computed tomography (CT), fluoroscopy, and nuclear medicine imaging exams that utilize ionizing radiation. A number of initiatives in radiation safety in medicine aim to provide higher quality clinical management of patients and to ensure that reasonable steps are taken to keep the exposures as low as possible without compromising diagnostic efficacy. The idea of tracking radiation exposures from medical diagnostic procedures as a means of individual dose monitoring and risk assessment to patients has been debated over the years and more recently national and international organizations have issued statements with opposing views. The Nuclear and Radiation Studies Board of the National Academies will host a two-hour webinar on December 14 to discuss the pros and cons of tracking radiation doses from medical diagnostic procedures and possible implications.

The year 2021 marks the 35th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident and the 10th anniversary of the Fukushima accident. This webinar, hosted by the Nuclear and Radiation Studies Board of the National Academies, will feature presentations and discussions on radiation and non-radiation induced health effects to populations impacted by the accidents as well as potential transgenerational effects.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Thousands of residents in the two cities lost their lives from the explosions or soon after from radiation sickness. With joint Japanese and American support, the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) and its predecessor have systematically followed the health effects of the survivors, the hibakusha, and their offspring. Studies on the atomic bombing survivors have been the primary basis for estimating the health risks from radiation exposure and setting radiation protection standards worldwide. This webinar will feature presentations from the RERF Director and other investigators on the history of the Foundation and its achievements, current research, and future directions.

Ultraviolet light at a particular “short” wavelength (known as UVC) has been used for decades to disinfect unoccupied medical and other facilities and reduce the spread of airborne infectious diseases such as tuberculosis. Not surprisingly, UVC has now gained attention as a promising control measure to reduce transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The Nuclear and Radiation Studies Board of the National Academies invites you to explore current knowledge and possible solutions to safely and effectively use UVC in occupied medical facilities and public locations to reduce airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2.
