The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will host a one-day gathering on Wednesday October 30, 2024, of selected experts and governmental officials to discuss the scientific and technical issues surrounding potential impacts to the Cape Cod aquifer from the Massachusetts Army National Guard’s proposed machine gun range at Joint Base Cape Cod. The National Academies serves as a neutral convener to facilitate exchange and share information and ideas. This meeting is not open to the public, and no product will be generated.
Description
The National Academies will convene and facilitate a meeting with subject matter experts representing different disciplinary backgrounds including groundwater hydrology, geology and geochemistry, aquifer monitoring and modeling, facilities construction and operation, risk assessment, exposure science, toxicology, and epidemiology. These experts will cover different professional sectors including government and academia. Experts will act individually in their personal capacities. No National Academies-endorsed product will be developed from the meeting, nor will consensus opinions be reached.
The experts would be asked to discuss:
- The most relevant scientific and engineering data, as well as monitoring and modeling approaches, needed to understand and protect the aquifer from potential impacts to groundwater by construction or operation of the MPMGR.
- Specific potential contaminants and contaminant pathways that could impact the aquifer from the MPMGR.
- Limitations in research methods, monitoring, and/or mitigation related to construction and operation of the MPMGR and potential impacts to the aquifer.
- Experiences from similar gun range sites, including best practices to prevent impacts to the aquifer.
