Combat Search and Rescue in Highly Contested Environments - A Workshop

Completed

The Air Force Studies Board organized a 3-day workshop on combat search and rescue in contested environments to discuss and illustrate the challenges presented by the emergence of Anti-Access/Area Denial and Integrated Air Defense Systems. The workshop focused on the needs of the isolated personnel and how changes in training and equipment and the adaptation of new technologies can help to address the challenge.

Description

An organizing committee will plan and convene a 3-day workshop to: (1) examine how the United States Air Force (USAF) will develop and implement imminent requirements for training, planning and executing future combat search and rescue (CSAR) requirements in highly contested environments; (2) examine how future CSAR could be augmented and/or executed utilizing other military services and NATO partners; and (3) examine Science and Technology (S&T) solutions that may be applied to future CSAR needs. The principle focus of this workshop will highlight the challenges surrounding the survival of the isolated personnel in a highly contested environment.

The committee will develop the agenda for the workshop, select and invite speakers and discussants, and moderate the discussions.

The workshop will use a mix of individual presentations, panels, breakout discussions, and question-and-answer sessions to develop an understanding of the relevant issues. Key stakeholders would be identified and invited to participate. Following NRC procedures, two brief workshop proceedings will be prepared by a designated rapporteur.
