Addressing climate change by decarbonizing the U.S. energy system is essential and possible, with far-reaching benefits for public health and economic development. Recent legislation has put the nation on the path towards achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, but many challenges remain.

An upcoming National Academies’ report, Accelerating Decarbonization in the United States, identifies key actions necessary to support the nation’s decarbonization efforts, including policy, technology, and societal dimensions. The report provides sector-by-sector recommendations to help policymakers successfully implement an equitable energy transition over the next decade and beyond.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine committee on “Accelerating Decarbonization in the United States: Technology, Policy, and Societal Dimensions” has been tasked to assess a broad spectrum of technological, policy, and social dimensions of decarbonizing the U.S. economy. California's Transformative Climate Communities (TCC) present a unique opportunity for California neighborhoods to bring diverse stakeholders together to work collaboratively on a blueprint for capacity-building while identifying Greenhouse Gas mitigation projects that have multiple public, economic, and health co-benefits. This open session seeks to hear from various TCC stakeholders about the program's benefits and the potential for it to be expanded nationwide and implemented with federal funds appropriated by the Inflation Reduction Act.

This information gathering session will ask the national laboratories, the Department of Energy, and non-governmental organizations doing major work related to the built environment to lay out what they see as (1) priority actions (so-called “low hanging fruit”) that could be providing carbon benefits starting today, and (2) technologies that need RD&D, and what that RD&D would entail and cost, to provide carbon benefits in the future.

Compensation through public revenue and private payments has long played an influential role in public attitudes towards and experiences of large-scale energy infrastructure. Compensation policy failures can amplify or focus public resistance to energy transitions and/or new projects, and are implicated in injustices that affect host communities.

The National Academies' Committee on Accelerating Decarbonization in the United States: Technology, Policy, and Societal Dimensions invites you to join them for a webinar on October 3 at 12:00-3:00 PM ET that explores state-of-the-art knowledge and practices in the design and implementation of compensation programs, with the goal of advancing recommendations that help solve for equity, restorative justice, and social acceptance outcomes associated with the build out of new large-scale infrastructure essential for rapid decarbonization of the energy system. The committee aims to collect perspectives that include private as well as public compensation, and generation as well as transmission facilities. Experts will review strengths and weaknesses, and innovations in policy and practices which address how local financial benefits are determined and awarded across different technologies and jurisdictions. A key priority for the webinar is to identify those policies which do the best job of addressing power differentials among affected publics and between affected publics and project proponents. This webinar will serve to build upon the findings and recommendations of the committee’s 2021 report, Accelerating Decarbonization of the U.S. Energy System, and guide them in writing a second.

As the United States embarks on a path towards net-zero carbon emissions, understanding how to decarbonize the manufacturing sector will be critical. The 2021 National Academies' report Accelerating Decarbonization of the U.S. Energy System outlines critical near-term policies needed for the decarbonization effort. Among many other things, this report recommends that Congress provide manufacturing incentives to firms through various policy tools and create a new Assistant Secretary for Carbon Smart Manufacturing and Industry within DOE.

As part of information gathering for the study's second report, the National Academies' Committee on Accelerating Decarbonization in the United States: Technology, Policy, and Societal Dimensions will host a webinar on September 9 at 2:00-3:30pm ET with representatives from DOE's Advanced Manufacturing Office and several USA Manufacturing Institutes to explore their roles in accelerating energy and GHG emissions reductions in the industrial sector. The panel discussion aims to provide information to the committee on opportunities, paths, and near-term actions for industrial decarbonization.

As the United States embarks on a path towards net-zero carbon emissions, many entities are considering agriculture-based carbon offsets to reach their net-zero emissions goals. However, the measurement of carbon uptake in soil is not documented in a standardized way in current offset markets, and large questions remain about incentives, additionality, permanence, and monitoring and verification.

As part of input gathering for their upcoming report, the committee on Accelerating Decarbonization in the United States: Technology, Policy, and Societal Dimensions invites you to join them on Monday, June 6 from 2-4pm ET for a discussion on the ability of the private sector to deliver meaningful agricultural soil carbon offsets in the United States, the status of markets around soil carbon, and what type of government policy might improve outcomes.

During this session, we will hear from scientists, nonprofits, and government agencies, as well as from speakers connected with the financial sector and from private institutions seeking to attain documentable emissions reductions via an offset market. The Committee on Accelerating Decarbonization in the United States: Technology, Policy, and Societal Dimensions is hosting a two-day webinar on the role of subnational entities in accelerating decarbonization. This webinar will serve to build upon the findings and recommendations of the committee’s 2021 report, Accelerating Decarbonization of the U.S. Energy System, and guide them in writing a second. The committee will hear the perspectives of local and regional government bodies, utility trade associations, private sector groups, state officials, and other organizations involved in subnational energy transitions. Four moderated panel conversations aim to create clarity around how all these actors interact and influence one another, and explore ways that subnational actors can work together to accelerate clean energy transitions.

The Accelerating Decarbonization Committee will host panel discussions on industrial decarbonization options to gather information for the writing of their chapter. Through the scheduled panel discussions, the committee will explore needs and opportunities for decarbonizing small- and medium-sized industrial companies; opportunities for biomass to serve as an energy resource and feedstock in the industry; ways to tailor industrial decarbonization strategies to different geographic regions; and policy options for industrial decarbonization. The event will consist of Q&A sessions with speakers involved in different aspects of industry with questions from the National Academies’ Committee only.
