Description
A planning committee established by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene a virtual public workshop over 2-3 days to discuss Materials Science and Engineering in a post-pandemic world, including, but not limited to topics such as: 1) how the COVID-19 pandemic is impacting, and is expected to impact the DOD materials and manufacturing capabilities; 2) how the current workforce required to provide the materials and manufacturing capabilities is affected; 3) what are the efforts being considered to address the future DOD materials and manufacturing needs; and 4) what might the future of the DOD workforce pipeline look like. The planning committee will also consider additional topics close to and in line with the four mentioned above when developing the workshop agenda and selecting and inviting speakers and discussants. The planning committee will also ensure that workforce discussions embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as training, retirement, and the possible loss of a partial generation of talent as a result of COVID-19. The workshop will use a mix of individual presentations, panels, and question-and-answer sessions to develop an understanding of the relevant issues. An individually-authored Workshop Proceedings will be prepared by a designated rapporteur.
