This Month We Will Discuss

Using Drones in Ecology

Dr. James Nelson from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette will demonstrate drone-based work used to map marsh restoration sites, track hurricane impacts, and count bird nests. Dr. Nelson will show the technology and process scientists use to create high impact images.

The use of drones has rapidly expanded across many scientific disciplines. Recently, ecologists have developed new drone-based image analysis to support research. These images can be used to study the effects of hurricanes, observe habitat restoration, and count animals. Just as the implementation of satellite and aircraft-based imagery in previous decades brought a greater understanding of the patterns that shape our world, drone technology has the potential to revolutionize how individual scientist conduct their work. At the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:

Recognize that scientists come from all kinds of backgrounds and possess varied talents, interests, and goals.
Obtain, evaluate and communicate information on the effectiveness of management or conservation practices on habitats.
Evaluate the claims, evidence and reasoning that the complex interactions in ecosystems maintain relatively consistent numbers and types of organisms in stable conditions, but changing conditions may result in a new ecosystem.

As an interdisciplinary scientist, Dr. Nelson studies the response of coastal marine organisms and food webs to changes in both biotic and abiotic processes that are either the direct result of human actions or consequences of climate change, with a particular interest in how the movement of fishes influences trophic connectivity at multiple spatial scales.

This Month We Will Discuss

Topic: Engagement can Improve Scholarship and Increase Local Resilience

Dr. Garett Sansom from Texas A&M University School of Public Health will discuss the fruitful relationship between communities and academia. Drawing from personal experiences, Dr. Sansom, will provide best-practices and bi-directional communication pathways to successfully navigate community/academic partnerships.

Partnerships and trust between community members and researchers must be established prior to major hazards to improve rapid research needs. The benefits of engaging community members and other interest parties in research, interventions, and educational outreach are numerous. Dr. Sansom will provide a researcher’s perspective on the Texas A&M Superfund Center and its partnership with several Houston-Based organizations that work to improve local understanding and environmental conditions.

At the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:

Recognize that scientists come from all kinds of backgrounds and possess varied talents, interests, and goals.
Understand why community engagement is a necessary component to create resilient communities

Dr. Garett Sansom is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at Texas A&M University School of Public Health. As an environmental epidemiologist, Dr. Sansom’s research revolves around the relationship between environmental quality and human health implications. He specifically focuses on marginalized communities within highly industrial regions along the Houston Ship Channel, Galveston Bay, and locations throughout the petrochemical corridor that experience natural and anthropogenic hazards.

This Month We Will Discuss

Topic: Sea turtle journeys and survival stories

Dr. Hannah Vander Zanden from the University of Florida will discuss her scientific work with sea turtles. In this two-part webinar, participants will first learn about the migrations of these endangered species and how, using science, we have been able to uncover the details of these journeys. Next, participants will explore the threat of plastic to sea turtles.

Sea turtles have complex life cycles and undertake long migrations across the oceans of the world. At the same time, human activities have contributed to declines in populations, and all species of sea turtles are considered vulnerable or endangered. This webinar will consist of two 25-minute segments with time for questions and additional discussion at the end. At the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:

Recognize that scientists come from all kinds of backgrounds and possess varied talents, interests, and goals.

Describe and investigate various how the local ecosystem and their impacts native populations, including shelter, predation, and nesting sites.

Understand that scientific investigations involve the collection of relevant empirical evidence, the use of logical reasoning, and the application of imagination in devising hypotheses, predictions, explanations and models to make sense of the collected evidence.

Discuss the impacts on wildlife resulting from human activity.

Dr. Vander Zanden is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology and the Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research at the University of Florida. She uses chemical markers to reconstruct animal migration and better understand the ecology of a variety of organisms. Much of her research has focused on sea turtles, but has also included other species such as birds, bats, and butterflies.

Topic: Leaky Wellbores: How They Impact Us and What We Can Do About Them

Dr. Ipsita Gupta from Louisiana State University dives into how oil and gas activity can sometimes lead to leaks and spills which are harmful to human safety and our environment. Understanding how leaks and spills occur is critical for developing solutions to stop them from happening.

The catastrophic impact of oil leaks and well blowouts are widely known and can range from loss of human life to environmental hazards and infrastructure damage. Participants will learn about subsurface environments and interactions of fluids in the subsurface that can drive chemical reactions. At the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:

Recognize that scientists come from all kinds of backgrounds and possess varied talents, interests, and goals.
Understand that the way fluids interact in subsurface environments can drive different chemical reactions.
Recognize the importance of developing solutions for reducing the impacts of oil leaks and spills on human safety and the environment.
Communicate scientific and technical information about why chemistry is important in the functioning of designed materials.
