The Forum on Microbial Threats will host a 4-day virtual public workshop as part of a workshop series that will explore health systems, research opportunities, communication strategies, and policies that could be considered to address access, perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors toward vaccination.

Workshop participants will discuss the complex determinants of vaccination that hinder or promote vaccine uptake; how misinformation reinforces anxieties about vaccine safety and drivers of vaccine hesitancy; and communication approaches that would help assuage anxieties about vaccine safety.

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine organized a 2-hour virtual meeting on vaccine access and hesitancy, and the causes and effects of declining confidence in vaccines. The virtual meeting will explore topics to be expanded on more fully at the in-person meeting on August 19-20, 2020.

This virtual meeting is the first of a series of two workshops on the critical public health value of vaccines. Specifically, this workshop will feature invited presentations on questions of improving access to vaccines, creating demand for vaccines, and understanding vaccine hesitancy. Speakers will give particular attention to the role of social determinants of vaccine use and equitable distribution of vaccines.
