Description
A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize and convene a one-day public workshop to explore various aspects of faculty development with a focus on diversity and inclusion. Presentations will provide examples of how educators are using effective teaching strategies and of practices in health professional education. The workshop will emphasize the role of education in changing health systems that may include but are not limited to:
- Expanding educators’ pedagogical and andragogical skills;
- Keeping up with content knowledge;
- Developing relationships across health professions and across sectors;
- Being aware of changes in health systems and being ready to adapt education as indicated;
- Learning, teaching, and applying new technologies and data-driven applications;
- Understanding faculty’s role in assessing, mentoring and providing constructive feedback to learners and colleagues; and
- Recognizing one’s own limitations, physically, mentally, and financially to minimize the negative impacts of stress and prevent burnout.
The planning committee will develop a workshop agenda, select and invite speakers and discussants, and moderate the discussions. Following the workshop, a proceedings of the presentations and discussions at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
