The Effects of Juvenile Justice System Involvement on the Health and Well-Being of Adolescents, Families, and Communities of Color: A Workshop

Completed

A number of strategies are explored to prevent juvenile justice involvement and the negative impact of youth incarceration on youth and their families. Trauma-based interventions and efforts to reinforce self-regulation are among these approaches. Other efforts to reduce juvenile justice encounters focus on community level factors such as reducing poverty and increasing access to resources.

Building upon previous workshops focusing on aspects of the criminal justice system (incarceration and drug control policies), this one day workshop explored the links between juvenile justice experience and poor health outcomes for youth of color, their families, and their communities.

Description

An ad hoc planning committee will plan and conduct a one day public workshop on the effects of involvement with the juvenile justice system on the health and well-being of adolescents, families, and communities of color. The planning committee will define the specific topics to be discussed, develop the agenda, suggest and invite speakers, and moderate workshop discussions. This workshop may include discussions of youth confinement, adverse childhood events, policing practices, and the potential influence of mental health problems and substance use on involvement with the juvenile justice system. A proceedings of the presentations and discussions at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
