The Committee to Conduct a Feasibility Assessment of Veteran Health Effects of Manhattan Project (1942-1947) Related Waste will host a public presentation and discussion webinar associated with the release of its consensus report. We invite you to join the webinar, which will be held virtually on Friday, August 1, 2025 from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm Eastern time.

This report is a feasibility assessment to determine whether an epidemiologic study as directed by Congress in PL 117-168 section 506 could be conducted to examine health outcomes in active-duty military veterans who participated in the Manhattan Project (January 12, 1942- August 15, 1947) at 13 specified sites, given the specified period and uncertainties regarding what records or data exist for identifying individual veterans, their quantifiable project-related exposures (radiological, chemical, and combined), and where those records are located. It describes potential sources of records and information for exposures and health outcomes, and it characterizes their contents to the extent possible. The report offers conclusions on the feasibility of conducting such a study and provides alternative methods to examine associations between exposures and adverse health outcomes among this population of veterans.

Committee chair Dr. Linda McCauley (Emory University) will be joined by Committee members Dr. Nicole E. Martinez (Clemson University), Dr. Sarah S. Cohen (DLH, LLC), and Dr. Jason Krupar (University of Cincinnati) to discuss the Committee’s report, including its findings and conclusions.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Committee to Conduct a Feasibility of Assessing Veteran Health Effects of Manhattan Project (1942-1947) Related Waste will hold an information gathering session on December 16, 2024, in St. Louis, Missouri. Experts from the St. Louis area will describe potential sources and characteristics of records and information on military veterans who participated in Manhattan Project activities at the St. Louis sites specified in the committee’s statement of task. As part of this information gathering session, community members and interested parties will have the opportunity to sign up to give a public comment through the registration link for the meeting. No data will be collected or analyzed as part of this feasibility study, but this information will inform the committee’s report and conclusion regarding whether a full epidemiologic study can be conducted as directed in PL 117-168 (PACT Act). The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Committee to Conduct a Feasibility of Assessing Veteran Health Effects of Manhattan Project (1942-1947) Related Waste will hold its first meeting on January 10-11, 2024. This is a feasibility study to identify, understand, and characterize available data and information pertaining to veterans who served on active duty during the Manhattan Project (1942-1947), including locations, types of exposures (e.g. chemical, radiation, or combined), demographic and military characteristics, other types of exposures outside of the Manhattan Project, and health outcomes including cause of death. The assessment will determine whether a full epidemiologic study can be conducted as directed in PL 117-168 (PACT Act). No data will be collected or analyzed as part of this feasibility study.

As part of this meeting, the committee will hold a public session to gather information related to its task. The public session will be held virtually on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, from 12:50 PM to 2:30 PM ET.

This session will feature a presentation from the Department of Veterans Affairs, sponsor of the study, and which will include the official charge to the committee. The session will also include an open comment period from public attendees who register in advance.
