O‘ahu Veterans Center – 1298 Kukila Street, Honolulu, HI 96818

In-person only; due to logistical considerations, remote participation will not be offered.

In 2021, fuel leaks at the Navy-operated Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility contaminated drinking water for approximately 93,000 people—many affiliated with the Department of Defense. Affected individuals include families, employees, public health responders, and health care providers.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is currently reviewing the health risks of JP-5 exposure and will make recommendations to the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs on clinical follow-up and care for those exposed. These community engagement events are a key part of that process.

Why Participate:

These in-person sessions offer a vital opportunity for those impacted—whether as residents, responders, health professionals, or community advocates—to share their experiences directly with the expert committee. Community input will help ensure the committee’s conclusions and recommendations are grounded in the lived experience and priorities of those most affected.

Choose from Two In-Person Sessions:

Afternoon session: 12:00–3:30 PM HST
Evening session: 5:00–8:30 PM HST

Both sessions will take place at the O‘ahu Veterans Center.

What to Expect:

Attendees will join small-group discussions based on their connection to the fuel release. Participants may self-select into groups such as:

Military-affiliated exposed residents (e.g., active duty, family members)
Civilian exposed residents
Civilian or military employees affected at work
Healthcare providers who treated affected individuals
Public health responders (e.g., Hawai'i Department of Health, EPA, ATSDR)
Other government agency representatives
Community advocates, organizers, or nonprofit staff

A committee member will facilitate each discussion and audio-recorded to inform the committee’s work. If any participant is quoted in the final report or materials, the committee will follow up to confirm approval of any language attributed directly to them.
