Following the June 2023 Supreme Court ruling against affirmative action in colleges and universities, many states introduced legislation in academia to disband DEI efforts. As of August 2024, 86 bills in 28 states have introduced DEI legislation for colleges and universities to disband diversity offices or staff, ban mandatory diversity training, prohibit institutions to use diversity statements in hiring and promotion, or bar colleges for considering race, sex, ethnicity, or national origin in admissions or employment.
This one-day workshop will explore changes in state legislation and policies affecting the health care and public health workforce and potential solutions for advancing DEI.

Description
A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene a public workshop to explore the evolution and impact of state diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) legislation and policies and potential solutions for achieving a more diverse health care and public health workforce through education, training, and health research.
The planning committee will organize the workshop, select, and invite diverse speakers, and moderate the discussions. The workshop will feature invited presentations and may include discussions on:
· Recent changes in state DEI legislation and policies affecting the health care and public health workforce,
· The impact of these policy changes on medical and public health training and curriculum, and health research,
· Student recruitment and faculty recruitment and retention for educating and training the health and public health’s workforce, and
· Potential solutions for mitigating adverse impacts of policy changes.
A proceedings of the workshop presentations and discussions will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
