Racial and ethnic inequities in health and health care impact individual well-being, contribute to millions of premature deaths, and cost the United States hundreds of billions of dollars annually. Addressing these inequities is vital to improving the health of the nation’s most disadvantaged communities—and will also help to achieve optimal health for all. In 2003, the Institute of Medicine examined the impacts of health care disparities and proposed solutions in Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial Bias and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care. Because disparities persist, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened an expert committee to revisit the 2003 report. The committee’s report reviews the major drivers of health care disparities, provides insight into successful and unsuccessful interventions, identifies gaps in the evidence base, and makes recommendations to advance health equity.

In a public release webinar, members of the committee will provide an overview of the report's key messages and recommendations and answer audience questions.

On September 6, 2023, the National Academies' ad hoc Committee on Unequal Treatment Revisited hosted a virtual workshop to discuss racial and ethnic healthcare disparities in the U.S. This was the last, in a series of workshops.

The study committee is tasked by the National Institutes of Health to examine the current state of racial and ethnic healthcare disparities in the U.S, highlight the major drivers of healthcare disparities, provide insight into successful and unsuccessful interventions, identify gaps in the evidence base and propose strategies to close those gaps, consider ways to scale and spread effective interventions to reduce racial and ethnic disparities in health care, and make recommendations to advance health equity. This work builds on the 2003 Institute of Medicine consensus report, Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine ad hoc Committee on Unequal Treatment Revisited: The Current State of Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care held a public session on February 1, 2023 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm ET.

Institutional leaders from the National Institutes of health (the study sponsor) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality presented the statement of task to the committee and discussed their expectations for the study during an open session of the meeting. Dr. Brian Smedley, Equity Scholar and Senior Fellow at the Urban Institute, who served as the study director for the 2003 IOM landmark report, Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care, presented his perspective on the report 20 years later.
