Enhancing Scientific Reproducibility through Transparent Reporting: A Workshop

Completed

This public workshop provided a venue for stakeholders to discuss the state of transparency in reporting pre-clinical biomedical research and explore the possibility of improving harmonization of reporting guidelines across journals and funding agencies. The workshop was convened by the Forum on Drug Discovery, Development, and Translation; the Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders; the National Cancer Policy Forum; and the Roundtable on Genomics and Precision Health. The workshop was co-sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, Cell Press, The Lancet, and Nature Research.

Please visit our event page for additional information and materials for the workshop.

Description

An ad hoc committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (National Academies) will plan and conduct a one-day public workshop to explore issues related to transparent reporting (e.g. disclosure of the availability and location of data, materials, analysis, and methodology) to improve rigor and reproducibility in biomedical research. The public workshop will feature invited presentations and discussions to:

Discuss the impact of transparent reporting of biomedical research on scientific reproducibility Examine principles and guidelines that have been developed and implemented by funders, journals, and professional societies to improve transparent reporting of biomedical research. Discuss best practices for maximizing compliance with these principles and guidelines and areas for improvement across disciplines. Explore barriers and opportunities for harmonization of requirements for enhancing transparency across the biomedical research lifecycle.

The committee will plan and organize the workshop, develop the agenda, select and invite speakers and discussants, and moderate or identify moderators for the discussions. A proceedings of the presentations and discussions at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
