This workshop provided a venue for stakeholders to consider the value and risks of clinical trial data sharing, in addition to discussing the advances, challenges, and opportunities in clinical trial data sharing efforts since release of the 2015 Institute of Medicine report, Sharing Clinical Trial Data: Maximizing Benefits, Minimizing Risk. The workshop was co-hosted by the National Academies Forum on Drug Discovery, Development, and Translation, the Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders, the National Cancer Policy Forum, and the Roundtable on Genomics and Precision Health, and co-sponsored by the Wellcome Trust.

An ad hoc planning committee under the auspices of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, will plan and conduct a two-day public workshop to discuss advances, challenges, and opportunities in clinical trial data sharing efforts since release of the 2015 Institute of Medicine report, Sharing Clinical Trial Data: Maximizing Benefits, Minimizing Risk.
The public workshop will feature invited presentations and discussions to:
- Discuss advances in clinical trial data sharing efforts (e.g. policies, platforms, collaborations, data sharing culture);
- Examine case studies and trends in clinical trial data sharing and discuss best practices/lessons learned;
- Discuss opportunities to facilitate the reuse of clinical trial data;
- Consider the perspectives and expectations of clinical trial participants, patients, research sponsors (pharmaceutical companies and nonprofit organizations), journals, academic researchers and institutions, and federal agencies; and
- Discuss remaining challenges and opportunities for engagement and collaboration across sectors to advance the sharing and reuse of clinical trial data.
The planning committee will organize the workshop, develop the agenda, select and invite speakers and discussants, and moderate or identify moderators for the discussions. A proceedings of the presentations and discussions at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
