Action Collaborative on Advancing Implantable Brain Stimulation

In progress

Any project, supported or not by a committee, that is currently being worked on or is considered active, and will have an end date.

In follow-up to the Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders’ October 2023 workshop on Exploring the Adoption of Implantable Brain Stimulation into Standard of Care for Central Nervous System Disorders, this action collaborative has aims to hear from different communities in the field (including, but not limited to, professional societies, community physicians, individuals with lived experience, and payers not represented at the workshop) to better understand diverse perspectives on opportunities and barriers to adoption.

Description

Description

The collaborative is an ad hoc activity convened under the auspices of the Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (the National Academies). The work it produces does not necessarily represent the views of any one organization, the Forum, or the National Academies, and is not subjected to the review procedures of, nor is it a report or product of, the National Academies.

Despite implantable brain stimulation’s increased usage in clinical care, there remains unaddressed barriers to fully adopting implantable brain stimulation into the standard of care in for central nervous system disorders. To better understand the current state of clinical utilization, patient and physician education, and economic considerations, on October 31, 2023 the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders hosted the workshop, Exploring the Adoption of Implantable Brain Stimulation into Standard of Care for Central Nervous System Disorders, to explore the challenges and potential pathways forward to advance the field.

The workshop highlighted strategies and opportunities for different groups to advance the adoption of implantable brain stimulation. While the perspectives of some groups were considered at the workshop, not all were. Therefore, this collaborative aims to engage a broader range of communities who could have different perceived barriers to adoption.

Collaborative Activities

The goal of this action collaborative, an ad hoc activity associated with the National Academies’ Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders, is to hear from different communities (e.g., professional societies, community physicians, individuals with lived experience, and payers) about their perceived barriers to adoption and share takeaways from the workshop through a series of informal facilitated conversations .
