Improving Drug Development for Dry Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD): A Workshop

Completed

There is strong interest across many stakeholders to increase progress around developing treatments for dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Advancements in drug discovery and development in dry AMD have been limited and slow due to issues surrounding disease characterization, surrogate endpoints, and clinical trial design. Given the pressing need for progress in the field, the Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders hosted a public workshop on November 15, 2014, bringing together key stakeholders, to discuss opportunities for advancing drug development for dry AMD, specifically geographic atrophy.

Description

An ad hoc committee will plan and host a one-day public workshop that will explore the science necessary to overcome current challenges associated with drug discovery and development to support dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Specifically, presentations and discussions will be designed to help participants:

  • Consider scientific opportunities and challenges in identifying and validating potential new targets for intervention;
  • Discuss opportunities to improve current and develop new animal models for dry AMD; and
  • Consider the evidence needed to use potential biomarkers as surrogate end points in clinical trials, and how to generate that evidence.

The committee will develop the agenda for the workshop session, select and invite speakers and discussants, and moderate the discussions. An individually authored brief workshop summary based on the presentations and discussions held during the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
