Genomics-Enabled Learning Health Care Systems: Gathering and Using Genomic Information to Improve Patient Care and Research - A Workshop

Completed

On December 8, 2014, the Roundtable on Genomics and Precision Health hosted a workshop to examine how a variety of systems are capturing and making use of genomic data to generate knowledge that can be used to advance patient care and research. The workshop goal was to evaluate the challenges, opportunities, and best practices for knowledge-generating health care systems and to understand how genomic information can be integrated into and enable this knowledge generation.

Description

An ad hoc committee will organize and conduct a public workshop to examine how various systems are capturing and making use of genomic data to advance patient care and research. Workshop presentations and discussions will explore the challenges, opportunities, and best practices for translating genomic data into knowledge that can inform both basic research and clinical care. In this context, various sources, tools, and methodology for the assessment of data related to the health care system may be considered. Electronic health record (EHR) developers and health information technology professionals, clinical providers, academic researchers, patient groups, and government representatives, among others, may be invited to present their perspectives. The committee will develop the workshop agenda, select speakers and discussants, and moderate the discussions. An individually-authored summary of the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional policy and procedures.
