After the 2019 release of Minority Serving Institutions: America's Underutilized Resource for Strengthening the STEM Workforce, the National Academies, in partnership with Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) across the United States, engaged in a series of town halls to promote the report’s findings. The report examines what works at MSIs to overcome long-standing challenges and identifies 7 broad promising practices and strategies to strengthen the quality of STEM education, research and workforce preparation for MSI students. Since its release, the report has helped make the case for investments in MSIs and the student populations and communities they serve. This town hall series brought additional attention to the report and, more importantly, to the work that MSIs are doing—how they are building their STEM capacities, what strategies and programs are working, the challenges they are facing, and what they need to continue working towards success.
For this capstone event, we will host a panel of leaders at institutions where selected town halls were held and ask them: how would you assess the contribution of the town hall? How would you assess the impact or follow-up activities on campus? What were your lessons learned and suggestions for next steps? Additionally, we will include presentations from aligned National Academies projects and reports related to promoting STEM Education, Research, and Workforce preparedness in defense research at HBCUs/MIs; effective mentorship in STEMM; and supporting women of color in tech.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine invites you to join a virtual town hall to hear from leadership and faculty at select Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) on their institutional goals for advancing STEM workforce preparation and research capacity on their campuses, and the steps they are taking to meet these goals.

TCUs fulfill a dual mission: educating students and addressing Native American tribal priorities, such as contributing to not only the economic growth of the reservation, but also community development, and social renewal. Most TCUs offer academic programming that has a direct connection to local workforce needs. Such efforts increase students’ applicable skill sets, boost their earning potential, and provide incentives for graduates to remain in the community. Over the past several decades, STEM-focused programming at TCUs has increased. Grant-funding opportunities and partnerships with federal agencies have enabled TCUs to expand their STEM programming; offer new degree options in the fields of information technology, environmental science, and science education; and provide research internship opportunities for their students. While progress has been made to bolster and sustain STEM success for this traditionally underrepresented population of students, additional investments and resources are needed.

Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) are the fastest growing type of enrollment-based Minority Serving Institutions, serving the educational needs of hundreds of thousands of students, advancing the full spectrum of human knowledge, and invigorating the cultural, social, and economic horizons of the regions they serve. Today these institutions are at the forefront of the nation's conversations about institutionalized racism, student support, and immigration that permeate political and legal discussions from campuses all the way to the recent Supreme Court decision on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. HSIs are also at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19, researching treatments, keeping their states and communities informed, and often providing direct service to their communities.

How have HSIs responded to the COVID-19 pandemic and to recent events, including the death of George Floyd and the uncertainty surrounding DACA? As HSI presidents look toward the fall, what have they learned from the COVID-19 crisis, how will their institutions evolve as a result, and what might that mean for the future of HSIs in the United States? How will HSIs adapt to the serious financial challenges likely to arise in states and the nation in the months ahead as a consequence of COVID-19? What are HSI campus leaders doing in preparation for a stronger and higher-profile role in terms of advocacy and leadership in directly addressing institutionalized racism in this country?

Please join the presidents of four of the nation’s premier HSIs as they discuss COVID-19 and issues of racial injustice. This event is the fourth in a series hosted by the National Academies' Board on Higher Education and Workforce and Issues in Science and Technology and sponsored by the Kresge Foundation and the U.S. Department of Defense HBCU/MI Program.
