With support from the Partnership for Evidence-based Response to COVID-19 (PERC), the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will host a virtual event on June 8 featuring representatives from the African science academies who will describe country-level preparedness and response to COVID-19. Speakers will be drawn from academies across East, West, and Southern African regions. Each African academy representative will describe specific activities designed to explore evidence-based policymaking related to non-pharmacological approaches to combating COVID-19. The work of the African academies builds on a long-standing relationship between the National Academies and academies of sciences throughout Africa. A key component to the work of academies, and highlighted through the specific activities carried out under the PERC/the National Academies program, is building demand for evidence on which sound policy decisions can be made based on the best available evidence. Efforts by African academies to meet this demand during a public health crisis will be explored at this webinar.
