In May 2021, the committee released its first report, Enhancing Community Resilience through Social Capital and Social Connectedness: Stronger Together! This event provides an opportunity to discuss with the committee and each other the applied research topics highlighted in the Stronger Together! report, and to identify potential partnership opportunities to build momentum for addressing the report’s findings.

Participants: applied research centers and researchers interested in understanding and strengthening the role of social capital and social connectedness in hazard mitigation and local resilience; potential research funding organizations interested in supporting this work*; and members of the Committee for Applied Research for Hazard Mitigation and Resilience.

*Please note that this meeting is not intended to match researchers to funders. The purpose of this webinar will be to share and socialize the findings of this report to spur and promote research interest in social capital and connectedness within the hazard mitigation and resilience sphere.

About

This Workshop is for the Committee on Applied Research for Hazard Mitigation and Resilience to gather data for their first consensus report on the theme "Social Capital and Connectedness for Resilience". The Workshop will feature four, 1-hour panels consisting of academics, community organizers, and industry experts on this topic.

While ‘being resilient’ has different meanings across communities, strong relationships and trust are essential elements in local resilience and community functioning prior to, during, and after disasters. Resilience requires formal and informal governance structures that support the entirety of a community, and social capital and social connectedness are essential for effective governance. As risks and threats increasingly cross jurisdictional boundaries, communities across regions will need to strengthen their connections and relationships for effective responses.
