Operationalizing Sustainable Development

Completed

An expert committee under the Science and Technology for Sustainability Program completed a short consensus report that identifies key research priorities and possible actionable steps needed to operationalize sustainable development. Two virtual public workshops were held in April and May 2022, which served as the primary source of evidence for its work. Videos of all the sessions are available in the Past Events section below.

Description

An ad hoc committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will identify key research priorities and possible actionable steps needed to operationalize sustainable development at the global and local levels. The committee will convene two virtual public workshops focused on (1) global and (2) local strategies as the primary source of evidence for its work, supplemented by background materials collected for the workshops and discussions held at the April 2021 Nobel Prize Summit and the July 2021 Sustainability Roundtable meeting. Each workshop will focus on pressing global challenges, such as science, technology, and innovation to enable societal transformations, including strengthening the science-policy interface, promoting innovation cohesion, and creating research agendas to inform post-2030 processes for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Following the workshops, the committee will prepare a brief consensus report that will identify key research priorities and possible actionable steps needed to operationalize sustainable development in the specific areas discussed at the workshops.
