The State of Resilience: A Workshop

Completed

Across the nation, innovative programs are showing exciting progress at building resilient communities. Now is a great time to take stock of these programs at federal, state and local levels. At the ResilientAmerica Roundtable, we strive to help communities build resilience to extreme events, save lives and reduce the social and economic costs of disasters. This event brought together policymakers and stakeholders at the federal, state and local levels to talk about what works, what doesn’t and what should happen next in this resilience arena.

Description

An ad hoc planning committee will organize a one and a half day workshop in Washington, DC on the State of Resilience. The objectives of the workshop are to take stock of the existing efforts in the public, private, and NGO sectors; document activities and impacts made thus far in building resilience; and discuss the future directions of community resilience. The activity will convene experts, practitioners, and noted leaders in resilience from the public, private, philanthropic, and academic communities.

There are three main goals for this workshop:

  1. Hear from noted leaders in resilience about existing programs, policies, and efforts to date, including the impact of their work, the challenges faced and overcome, and the next set of objectives for building resilience.
  2. Host a work session among communities, NGOs, academics, and other experts to hear their answers and solutions to the vexing questions and challenges of building resilience and decision making related to building community resilience.
  3. Take stock of and document existing activities, initiatives, and outcomes of those efforts to demonstrate the impact and results of investing in resilience.

A workshop summary authored by a rapporteur will be prepared.
