Pilot Summer Institute on Data Science and Science and Societal Advancement in Ukraine

The NASEM and the Simons Foundation will conduct a pilot summer institute on data science for science and societal advancement in Lviv, Ukraine, in August 2023. The institute will provide practice-oriented knowledge in the field of data science to a group of up to 40 PhD and early career researchers residing inside Ukraine.

Description

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) will conduct a summer institute on data science for science and societal advancement in Lviv, Ukraine, in August 2024. This institute continues the initial proof-of-concept institute conducted in Lviv in August 2023, which served as a model for providing early-career Ukrainian researchers access to current knowledge on key scientific topics.
The institute will provide practice-oriented knowledge in the field of data science to a group of 30-50 Ph.D. and early career researchers residing inside Ukraine. Topics to be covered relate to the application and knowledge of data science, including but not limited to the following:

  • Advances in Data Science
  • Economic Policy and Business Applications
  • Urban Data Science and Delivery of Services
  • Data Science and Environmental Monitoring
  • Data Science and Machine Learning
  • Security and Privacy of Machine Learning
  • Data Science to Advance Scientific Understanding.

A planning committee will develop the content of the institute and identify experts to participate.
