The Transformational Impact of 5G

The fifth generation of wireless networks and technology—collectively labeled 5G—present significant opportunity to transform connectivity. Improvements in bandwidth, latency, coverage, reliability, and security can enable an array of enhanced and new applications. This workshop will examine the state of research, development, and deployment of 5G technologies; the challenges of securing 5G networked devices and infrastructure; and the global landscape of competition on 5G deployment. Priorities for cross sector collaboration and coordination between government, universities, and industry to advance the nation’s leadership in wireless communication will be discussed.

Description

An ad hoc committee will organize a public workshop to consider the technical and policy challenges associated with the research, development, deployment of fifth generation wireless networks and technology, known as 5G. The workshop will consider emerging use cases of 5G -- in particular, how improvements in bandwidth, latency, coverage, reliability, security, and support for low power devices can enable an array of enhanced and new applications.It will also explore research priorities for advanced wireless networks beyond 5G and will consider the challenges of securing 5G network infrastructure and enabled devices. Priorities for cross-sector collaboration and coordination between government, universities, and industry to advance the nation’s leadership in wireless communication will be discussed. A brief rapporteur-authored workshop proceedings will be published.
