Using Research and Technology to Address Compounding Disparities

Completed

A multi-sectoral, interdisciplinary approach to understanding the dimensions and determinants of social disparities and their intersections is necessary to work towards equity and equality of opportunity in the face of rapid technology innovation changing the future of work. This GUIRR meeting considered these and other questions to inform cross-sector collaboration and coordination between government, universities, and industry on their roles in working towards addressing the compounding socioeconomic effects of disparities in income, health, education, and digital connectivity.

Description

An ad hoc committee will organize a public workshop to consider the role of institutions within the science and technology research enterprise in helping to address the compounding socioeconomic effects of disparities in income, health, education, employment, digital connectivity, and representation. The workshop will consider recent research on the interrelation of social disparities, and will explore how technology may be leveraged to identify, target, and address intersectional inequities. Implications of applying technology solutions to societal challenges in underserved communities, as well as best practices for community engagement in the deployment and use of emerging technologies, will be discussed. Priorities for multi-sectoral approaches and cross-sector collaboration and coordination between government, universities, and industry will be considered throughout the workshop. A brief rapporteur-authored workshop proceedings will be published.
