The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine invite you to our capstone event to culminate our 3-year town hall series. After the 2019 release of Minority Serving Institutions: America's Underutilized Resource for Strengthening the STEM Workforce, the National Academies, in partnership with Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) across the United States, engaged in a series of town halls to promote the report’s findings. The report examines what works at MSIs to overcome long-standing challenges and identifies 7 broad promising practices and strategies to strengthen the quality of STEM education, research and workforce preparation for MSI students. Since its release, the report has helped make the case for investments in MSIs and the student populations and communities they serve. This town hall series brought additional attention to the report and, more importantly, to the work that MSIs are doing—how they are building their STEM capacities, what strategies and programs are working, the challenges they are facing, and what they need to continue working towards success.
For this capstone event, we will host a panel of leaders at institutions where selected town halls were held and ask them: how would you assess the contribution of the town hall? How would you assess the impact or follow-up activities on campus? What were your lessons learned and suggestions for next steps? Additionally, we will include presentations from aligned National Academies projects and reports related to promoting STEM Education, Research, and Workforce preparedness in defense research at HBCUs/MIs; effective mentorship in STEMM; and supporting women of color in tech.

More than ever, the world understands the need for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the STEM fields. Dillard University continues to be an engine of equity and inclusion by preparing students for the workforce and other opportunities in STEM. Dillard, a private, historically Black university in New Orleans, Louisiana, has remained committed to providing students with a quality four-year liberal arts education. While at Dillard, students conduct research with their professors and mentors that often results in peer-reviewed publications, patents, and career opportunities. Our students come from all walks of life, and their successes have allowed them to go on to complete advanced and terminal degrees and enter the STEM workforce.

During this town hall event, you will hear from faculty and leaders about strategies that enable our students to enter and succeed in graduate school and STEM professions. Dillard faculty will share success stories about innovative training and research initiatives that ensure that students persist and graduate in STEM fields. You will also hear alumni describe how Dillard, through mentored educational and research experiences, accelerated their readiness for the graduate school and the workforce. We are open to collaborations, partnerships with private, federal agencies and other universities to provide additional opportunities for students.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and Community College of Philadelphia invite you to join a virtual town hall. Serving more than 685,000 individuals since 1965, the College plays an integral role in the education and advancement of Philadelphia’s residents and workforce. Community College of Philadelphia offers more than 100 associate degree, academic and proficiency certificate programs. Recent graduates continue to strengthen Philadelphia's local economy and workforce—85 percent of recent graduates who were working at a job eight months after graduating from the College were employed in the Philadelphia metro area. The College enables students to embark on a smart path to a bachelor’s degree program, with transfer agreements and partnerships to assist in the transition.

Students at Community College of Philadelphia have a variety of educational goals and academic needs. Whether they are preparing to enter the workforce, start on their path to a bachelor’s degree, start a new career, gain skills to advance in their current position, keep professional credentials up-to-date or discover new interests, the College provides deep resources and support services that help them explore their opportunities and reach their potential.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine invites you to join a virtual town hall to hear from leadership and faculty at select Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) on their institutional goals for advancing STEM workforce preparation and research capacity on their campuses, and the steps they are taking to meet these goals.

TCUs fulfill a dual mission: educating students and addressing Native American tribal priorities, such as contributing to not only the economic growth of the reservation, but also community development, and social renewal. Most TCUs offer academic programming that has a direct connection to local workforce needs. Such efforts increase students’ applicable skill sets, boost their earning potential, and provide incentives for graduates to remain in the community. Over the past several decades, STEM-focused programming at TCUs has increased. Grant-funding opportunities and partnerships with federal agencies have enabled TCUs to expand their STEM programming; offer new degree options in the fields of information technology, environmental science, and science education; and provide research internship opportunities for their students. While progress has been made to bolster and sustain STEM success for this traditionally underrepresented population of students, additional investments and resources are needed.

Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) are the fastest growing type of enrollment-based Minority Serving Institutions, serving the educational needs of hundreds of thousands of students, advancing the full spectrum of human knowledge, and invigorating the cultural, social, and economic horizons of the regions they serve. Today these institutions are at the forefront of the nation's conversations about institutionalized racism, student support, and immigration that permeate political and legal discussions from campuses all the way to the recent Supreme Court decision on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. HSIs are also at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19, researching treatments, keeping their states and communities informed, and often providing direct service to their communities.

How have HSIs responded to the COVID-19 pandemic and to recent events, including the death of George Floyd and the uncertainty surrounding DACA? As HSI presidents look toward the fall, what have they learned from the COVID-19 crisis, how will their institutions evolve as a result, and what might that mean for the future of HSIs in the United States? How will HSIs adapt to the serious financial challenges likely to arise in states and the nation in the months ahead as a consequence of COVID-19? What are HSI campus leaders doing in preparation for a stronger and higher-profile role in terms of advocacy and leadership in directly addressing institutionalized racism in this country?

Please join the presidents of four of the nation’s premier HSIs as they discuss COVID-19 and issues of racial injustice. This event is the fourth in a series hosted by the National Academies' Board on Higher Education and Workforce and Issues in Science and Technology and sponsored by the Kresge Foundation and the U.S. Department of Defense HBCU/MI Program.

The National Academies lead a symposium, Translating Intentionality to Strengthen STEM Education and Workforce Readiness, at the 2019 AAHHE annual conference. The symposium was lead by a member of the MSI report committee, Dr. Anne-Marie Nunez as well as Dr. Armida Ornelas, Vice President of Continuing Education and Workforce Development at East Los Angeles College. Topics of discussions included: moving away from weeding out students with introductory STEM classes; supporting community college students to continue their studies in STEM subjects after receiving a working certification; utilizing storytelling to more effectively teach STEM students; and increasing diversity of STEM faculty.

Audience included administrators, STEM faculty, and others working to increase diversity in STEM faculty.

The Space Foundation and American Astronomical Society collaborated with the Congressional STEAM Caucus and the Congressional CTE (Career and Technical Education) Caucus to host a briefing on the Challenges and Opportunities for Workforce Preparation in STEAM Fields to raise awareness for upcoming 2020 legislation focused on technical education and workforce development. The National Academies was invited to participate in the briefing to include discussion of the findings of the MSI report. Dr. Lorelle Espinosa, co-chair of the committee that produced the MSI report and Vice President of Research at the American Council on Education, joined three other panelists to discuss solutions to the STEM workforce crisis. Panelists were asked to discuss where they see the greatest opportunities are to increase STEAM involvement; how to foster supportive environments for STEAM students and ensure access to STEAM opportunities; and how the federal government can best support the advancement of a STEAM workforce.

University of Arizona Town Hall: Advancing STEM Equity at Minority Serving Institutions

The National Academies and the University of Arizona held a half-day town hall event on campus. The meeting focused on how to make transformational changes in teaching, learning and student support to better serve student needs in STEM disciplines. The meeting kicked off with remarks from institutional leadership and Department of Defense leadership on their respective goals and initiatives in STEM research and education. This was followed by a presentation on the requirements for making transformative changes in teaching and learning in higher education.

A number of University of Arizona faculty and administrators presented on STEM initiatives, including programs that (a) promote gender equity in STEM; (b) promote racial and ethnic diversity in the field of audiology; and (c) support greater equity in STEM education through interdisciplinary group learning. National Academies staff along with committee member, Dr. Anne-Marie Nunez of the Ohio State University (member of the MSI study committee), presented on the consensus report and the innate advantages of HSIs to better serve their student population.

The meeting ended with an interactive exercise requiring participants to develop action that could produce transformative changes in STEM teaching, learning, and student support for the University of Arizona.

Presentation at TCU STEM Faculty Partnering and Sharing Meeting held by American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) and the Department of Defense. Tom Rudin, Director of the National Academies Board on Higher Education and Workforce, presented the consensus report findings and lead a group discussion challenging meeting participants to identify ways to overcome the most significant barriers that TCUs face in advancing their STEM research and education using the recommendations from the consensus report.

The National Academies hosted a one-day town hall meeting to convene key stakeholders from Minority Serving Institutions, federal and state government agencies, and philanthropic and private sectors from the Washington DC area and surrounding states to—

Examine promising approaches to increase MSI student success and workforce preparation in STEM fields
Discuss strategies for enabling stronger, more productive partnerships between MSIs and public and private stakeholders that support STEM investments
Develop ideas and strategies that bridge the gaps between the MSI community and government agencies
Raise awareness among policymakers, the media, and the public of the vital role of MSIs in supporting economic development and national security.
