Appendix A

Statement of Task

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize and conduct a public workshop to explore existing evidence and knowledge gaps and opportunities to advance future research for serious illness care. Workshop presentations and discussions will focus on areas that may include

  • Inclusive research approaches to advance health equity in care for the diverse population of people with serious illness
  • Safe and effective therapies to address pain and other physical and psychological symptoms and improve the quality of life for people with serious illness
  • Quality measurement for serious illness (e.g., development of patient-centered outcome measures for a diverse patient population)
  • The integration of behavioral/mental health care into serious illness care
  • Care delivery models that effectively address the needs of people with serious illness and their families, including existing gaps in care provided by distinct delivery models as well as areas for future research to further develop the evidence base on the capacity of novel care delivery models to address the needs of people with serious illness and their families

  • Opportunities for research coordination and collaboration among diverse stakeholders, including members of the interdisciplinary care team, informal and formal care partners, researchers, and other stakeholders who could strengthen the research enterprise with the goal of enhancing care for people of all ages and stages of serious illness.

The planning committee will organize the workshop, develop the agenda, select and invite speakers and discussants, and moderate or identify moderators for the discussions. A proceedings of the presentations and discussions at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
