Advancing this research agenda requires interdisciplinary collaboration and stakeholder engagement. Policymakers, researchers, community representatives, and the private sector must collaborate to address the complex challenges at the nexus of climate change and health. This collaboration should prioritize the inclusion of voices from the most affected communities, ensuring that research and interventions are culturally appropriate and effectively address local needs.
Investment in a comprehensive research ecosystem that promotes transdisciplinary science and innovation is crucial. This includes securing adequate funding, developing robust data collection and analysis systems, and fostering international cooperation. The establishment of a searchable database and tools portal will support researchers, policymakers, and the public in accessing and using the wealth of knowledge generated.
By filling the identified research gaps and implementing the proposed strategies, we can develop effective interventions that protect human health and promote resilience. For a list of sample research questions that will enable the field to take intentional action, see Appendix F. This list of questions can be used in multiple contexts to garner the data needed to inform decision making to strengthen communities and protect health amidst the climate crisis. There is a need for immediate and sustained action, where all stakeholders contribute to a collective effort that ensures a healthier and more equitable future in the face of a changing climate.
