Conference Objectives
The conference planning committee developed the following objectives to guide the event:
- Awareness and understanding of all aspects of women and gender in transportation systems, workforce, and education worldwide
- Progress on and performance of gender-inclusive transportation practices, policies, and research
- Possible solutions to advance gender equity and inclusion in transportation, including how past research has influenced practice
- Exchange of ideas and creation of connections between peers and mentors from all sectors in an interactive and inclusive setting
- Ideas to help advance policy and practice and foster personal and career development
Conference sessions at WGiT 2024 explored research findings and practical insights on advancing gender equity in transportation. Topics included gender-sensitive infrastructure design, workforce dynamics, and leadership strategies for systemic change. Sessions also examined the intersections of equity and technology, with a particular focus on AI applications in transportation, risk management, and data-driven decision-making.
Discussions highlighted the importance of integrating equity into organizational practices and policy frameworks, alongside innovative uses of technology to address long-standing disparities. Key challenges, such as bias in AI, fostering inclusive work environments, and ensuring equitable representation in leadership, were explored in depth. Participants also shared strategies for building community trust, enhancing safety, and leveraging interdisciplinary collaboration to drive equity-centered transportation solutions.
