Emerging Hazards in Commercial Aviation—Report 1:
Initial Assessment of Safety Data and Analysis Processes
Commercial aviation safety in the United States has improved more than 40-fold over the last several decades, according to industry statistics. The biggest risks include managing safety in the face of climate change, increasingly complex systems, changing workforce needs, and new players, business models, and technologies.
Requested by Congress in P.L. 116-260, the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021, this new report is the first of a series of six that will be issued from Transportation Research Board of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine over the next 10 years on commercial aviation safety trends in the U.S.
These briefings were for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The report was publicly released on August 1, 2022 and can be found, in its entirety, on the Web site of the National Academies Press.
