Leveraging Unmanned Systems for Coast Guard Missions:
A Strategic Imperative
This new report, from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, was requested by Congress in P.L. 115-282, the Frank LoBiondo Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2018. It reviews the current and emerging capabilities of the Coast Guard’s unmanned systems -- technologies which include aerial, surface, and underwater vehicles with no human occupants; vehicles that may have a crew but with some level of remote control; and systems that are not vehicles -- their affordability, reliability, and versatility; and any realignments in Coast Guard policies, procedures, and protocols that may be necessary to exploit them more fully and effectively.
This briefing was for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The report was publicly released on November 12, 2020 and can be found, in its entirety, on the Web site of the National Academies Press.
