Strategies to Enable Assured Access to Semiconductors for the Department of Defense
This new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine was requested by Congress in P.L. 116-283, the William M. (Mac) Thornberry National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021. The report addresses the challenges that the Department of Defense is experiencing as it engages with the global microelectronics sector and explores ways to engage with public-private partnerships to support assured production and innovation in the semiconductor industry. The recommendations focus on long-term strategic coordination, investment in emerging technologies, leveraging of commercial advancements, and a modernization strategy that is nimble enough to incorporate emerging technologies and be responsive to global competition.
These briefings were for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The report was publicly released on August 28, 2024 and can be found, in its entirety, on the Web site of the National Academies Press.
