The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a session, Shaping your future: Community perspectives on AI education, workforce development, and sustainability during the National Sustainability Society’s Second Annual Conference on October 21, 2025 at the University of Notre Dame.

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to reshape economies, education systems, and labor markets, the urgency to align AI-driven innovation with principles of sustainability and equity has never been greater. This session explored the intersection of AI education, workforce development, and sustainability through an inclusive, community-centered lens. Building on the National Academies 2020 report on Strengthening Sustainability Programs and Curricula at the Undergraduate and Graduate Levels, participants discussed how we can build an AI-ready workforce that advances our sustainability goals.

A most recent meeting of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability was held on June 4-5, 2025.
On June 4, the Roundtable, in collaboration with the Board on Mathematical Sciences and Analytics and the Board on Human-System Integration, convened a one-day public workshop, Artificial Intelligence for Sustainability: Maximizing Benefits for the United States. The workshop examined how AI can be leveraged to maximize benefits for the United States at the intersection of nature, people, and this critical technology.
On June 5, Roundtable members discussed potential ideas for sustainability science and technology activities. The session included a public webinar on the 4th Edition of the Frontiers Planet Prize: Advancing Global Scientific Solutions.

On June 4, 2025, the National Academies Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability, in collaboration with the Board on Mathematical Sciences and Analytics and Board on Human-System Integration, convened a hybrid workshop, Artificial Intelligence for Sustainability: Maximizing Benefits for the United States.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability convened a panel, Research to Policy: National Academies Sustainability Roundtable on September 11, 2024 from 3:15-4:30 pm PDT in Seattle, WA. The session was held during the National Sustainability Society Conference on Innovation, Implementation, and Workforce Development for Sustainability.

Discussions included an overview of the Sustainability Roundtable, including its approaches to sustainability and recent accomplishments. Presentations focused on perspectives from industry and nongovernmental organizations, including key messages from the National Academies 2020 report, Strengthening Sustainability Programs and Curricula at the Undergraduate and Graduate Levels and opportunities for engagement with the Sustainable Development Goals. Discussions also included possible strategies to engage youth, civil society, and local governments and foster partnerships among sectors, regions, and nations in addressing sustainability.

The National Academies Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability, in collaboration with the Board on Health Care Services and Board on Science Education, convened a hybrid workshop, Artificial Intelligence in Education and Mental Health for a Sustainable Future on May 30, 2024.

The workshop consisted of two parts: AI in mental health and well-being and AI in education. A virtual meeting of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability was held on December 19, 2023. This meeting focused on discussions of Roundtable priorities and suggestions for potential ideas for sustainability science and technology activities in 2024.
The meeting also included a session on challenges and opportunities relating to climate migration and sustainable development. Speakers from international organization, academia, and nongovernmental organization discussed impacts of climate migration on displaced science, engineering, and medical professionals, as well as perspectives from small island developing states. Discussions were related to the Sustainable Development Goals, including Goals 3 (good health and well-being), 4 (quality education), and 13 (climate action).

The meeting of the Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability was held on July 24-25, 2023. On July 24, the Roundtable, in collaboration with the Board on Energy and Environmental Systems and the Board on Science Education convened a one-day public workshop, Challenges and Opportunities towards a Just Transition and Sustainable Development. Participants discussed scientific-related priorities to a just transition and ways to translate research from the lab to the field and practice, as well as ways to inform policy making. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussion of the workshop.
On July 25, the Roundtable held a session on Sustainability across the National Academies, and senior staff from different divisions and programs within the National Academies discussed current activities and priorities relating to sustainability. Roundtable members also discussed suggestions for potential ideas for sustainability science and technology activities for Fall 2023.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability, in collaboration with the Board on Energy and Environmental Systems and the Board on Science Education convened a one-day public workshop, Challenges and Opportunities towards a Just Transition and Sustainable Development on Monday, July 24, 2023.
The workshop discussed just transitions and sustainability initiatives across the globe, including key measurement frameworks and the nexus between just transitions and the Sustainable Development Goals. Participants discussed the role of the private sector, including how small and medium-sized enterprises could benefit from just transitions, and positive case studies relating to opportunities for education and inclusive skills development for clean energy transitions.
The workshop was designed to provide scientific input to the discussions of a Private Sector Summit, to be held on the margins of the United Nations 2023 SDGs Summit in September. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussion of the workshop.

On June 1, the Roundtable, in collaboration with the Division on Earth and Life Studies (DELS) and Health and Medicine Division (HMD) held a public workshop, Sustainability Implications of the Ukraine Conflict and Global Food Security. Participants from government, academia, the private sector, and nongovernmental organizations discussed global food security challenges arising from the Ukraine conflict and possible approaches to address these challenges toward a sustainable future. A Proceedings of a Workshop-in Brief will be prepared and distributed broadly.
On June 2, Roundtable members heard from our stakeholders about their current activities and priorities, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Department of Energy, National Institute of Standards and Technology, and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Roundtable members also discussed suggestions for potential ideas for sustainability science and technology activities for Fall 2022.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a public workshop, Sustainability Implications of the Ukraine Conflict and Global Food Security on June 1, 2022. The workshop was held as part of the June 2022 meeting of the Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability (STS Roundtable).
The workshop discussed global food security challenges arising from the Ukraine conflict and possible approaches to address these challenges toward a sustainable future. Together, Russia and Ukraine account for 29 percent of global wheat exports, 80 percent of the world's sunflower oil, and an estimated 40 percent of barley. Russia and Belarus are the two largest suppliers of fertilizers around the globe. An early assessment of global consumption of these commodities shows devastating compounding consequences for people and the environment in the short- and long-term.
Other global crises could further complicate this issue, from severe droughts in the western U.S. to supply chain issues with global implications for the U.S. and vulnerable countries in Africa, South America, and the Middle East. Participants discussed short-term responses to the current crisis, opportunities for international collaborations, and how this crisis could impact U.S. national security interests in a changing climate.
The workshop was sponsored by the National Academies George and Cynthia Mitchell Endowment for Sustainability and jointly organized by the Policy and Global Affairs Division, Division on Earth and Life Studies, and the Health and Medicine Division. A Proceedings of a Workshop-in Brief will be prepared and distributed broadly.

The most recent meeting of the Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability was held on November 22, 2021. The meeting begun with two presentations: 1) Towards a New National Academies Climate Center and 2) Roundtable Accomplishments and Vision for the Future provided by new Roundtable Chair Klaus Tilmes and Senior Director Franklin Carrero-Martínez.

The Roundtable leadership discussed that the vision of the Roundtable includes the creation of a more systematic process to infuse sustainability across the National Academies by leveraging the expertise of Roundtable members. The meeting focused on discussions of Roundtable priorities in the context of collaboration with other National Academies activities. Roundtable members discussed suggestions for Roundtable approaches and potential ideas for sustainability science and technology activities for the upcoming years.
