Are you curious about who rides public transit, when they ride it, and what factors contribute to increasing ridership? TRB hosted a webinar on Tuesday, August 18, 2020, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM Eastern that explored public transit ridership trends. The presenter discussed bus and rail services in urban and suburban areas, focusing on what has changed in the past several years. She also presented strategies that transit agencies are utilizing for all transit modes in response to changes in ridership.

This webinar draws on research from TCRP Research Report 209: Analysis of Recent Public Transit Ridership Trends.

Older workers are retiring in droves, and new employees are not entering the aviation workforce swiftly enough to replace those leaving. TRB hosted a webinar on Thursday, August 6, 2020 from 2:00 to 3:30 PM Eastern that identified ways to address the labor shortage by fostering the next generation of aviation professionals, including pilots, mechanics, and airport managers. This webinar discussed engaging students by piquing their interest in the aviation industry at a young age. Presenters highlighted activities that state agencies, airports, and educators may use to develop and sustain strategies that promote aviation as a career. They also explained how these activities can be adapted to fit any agency’s budget, skill set, and audience.

Collecting pavement condition data is essential for managing airport pavements and ensuring safe operations. However, the availability of guidance for airports to be able to collect, apply, and maintain pavement condition data has not kept pace with rapid changes in technologies. TRB hosted a webinar on Tuesday, July 7, 2020 from 2:00 to 3:30 PM Eastern that explored how pavement condition data are used and managed by airports. Presenters provided guidance about how to distinguish differing techniques and discuss the associated decisions related to these practices. They also identified new technologies and the future of pavement data collection.

Often referred to as “on-demand services,” demand-responsive transportation (DRT) relies extensively on the development of transactional data specifications. TRB hosted a webinar on Thursday, April 16, 2020, from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM ET that explored how these data specifications may help facilitate interaction between software systems that manage DRT services in the United States. Presenters discussed what specifications are needed and their possible benefits. The goal of transactional data specifications is to enable DRT services to more fully integrate among various mobility services.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has had a profound impact on supply chains for many different critical products, both in the United States and worldwide. The pandemic has created major changes in freight flows and has challenged the ability to deliver products to companies and consumers within the needed time frame. This has perhaps most acutely become an issue an issue for both medical supplies and food delivery. TRB hosted a webinar on Wednesday, April 8, 2020, from 2:00 to 3:30 PM Eastern that explored the impacts of COVID-19 on the supply chain and logistics industries. Presenters discussed lessons learned from past freight transportation and supply chain disruptions, identifed research that has been done to address resilience in the supply chain, described how to mitigate the economic impacts of these disruptions, and provided commentary on current supply chain disruptions due to COVID-19. When airports are considering expanding or improving their stormwater facilities, conducting a benefit-cost analysis helps illuminate options and prioritize investments. Across the nation, innovative programs are showing exciting progress at building resilient communities. Now is a great time to take stock of these programs at federal, state and local levels. At the ResilientAmerica Roundtable, we strive to help communities build resilience to extreme events, save lives and reduce the social and economic costs of disasters. On June 28-29, the ResilientAmerica Roundtable hosted the State of Resilience Leadership Forum and Community Workshop. This event brought together policymakers and stakeholders at the federal, state and local levels to talk about what works, what doesn’t and what should happen next in this resilience arena.

The Leadership Forum was held on June 28 featured three armchair discussions among noted leaders in the resilience movement, each moderated by National Public Radio's Andrea Seabrook. Dr. C. Providing opportunities for peer-to-peer learning among community leaders
Articulating the big challenges yet to come in advancing resilience

Panel sessions included Engaging with Diverse Populations, Healthy Communities, Building Partnerships and Coalitions, Measuring Resilience, Climate Adaptation and Resilience, and Incentivizing Resilience.
