Between 2020-2023, many health systems and organizations created formal positions to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and health equity in response to social and health injustices and public demands for diversity and equity among executive level leadership. The National Academies Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity hosted an October 2023 public hybrid workshop to explore the successes and challenges of DEI and health equity C-suites, dimensions of DEI and health equity commitments, strategies for achieving internal and external goals, and potential metrics for measuring success.

Winston F. Wong

Dr. Winston Wong is a Scholar-in-Residence at the Kaiser Permanente UCLA Center for Health Equity with a four-decade history of addressing health equity as a clinician, medical director, officer of the U.S. Public Health Service, physician executive, non-profit Board director, federal advisor, and philanthropic leader. He currently leads the National Council of Asian Pacific Islander Physicians after a 17-year career as Medical Director, Community Benefit for Kaiser Permanente. Anchored by his experiences as an FQHC physician serving residents in Oakland Chinatown, Dr. Wong has led national efforts to advance cultural competence and access to marginalized populations, including chair of the DHHS Advisory Committee on Minority Health. An Associate of the National Research Council, Dr. Wong served on the NASEM’s Board on Population Health and Public Health Practice and NASEM committees addressing the Future of Nursing and the Intersection of Public Health and Primary Care. A graduate of the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, Dr. Wong’s professional contributions have been recognized by the California Primary Care Association, Asian Health Services, the American Journal of Public Health, Latino Health Access, the AT Still School of Osteopathy and Congresswoman Barbara Lee.

Yvette Calderon

Dr. Calderon is currently a tenured Professor of Emergency Medicine (EM) at the Icahn School of Medicine and Chair of the Department of EM at Mount Sinai Beth Israel. She is renowned for her lifelong commitment to providing care to the underserved, finding solutions to address disparate medical care in vulnerable communities and promoting diversity in the field of medicine to reflect the diversity of patients served. It must be stressed that her research has been nationally and internationally transformational in incorporating public health initiatives in EM. She designed and implemented screening programs to identify patients with undiagnosed and/or untreated HIV/HCV and successfully linked these patients to care.
Dr. Calderon was named as Dean / VP for Equity in Clinical Care this year and will lead efforts to ameliorate disparities in treatment and improve health outcomes for patients of the Mount Sinai Health System and School. She was appointed to the National Academy of Medicine in 2022.
Dr. Calderon received her medical degree and Master of Science in Clinical Research Methods from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and her undergraduate degree at Brown University. Dr. Calderon completed her medical internship at Beth Israel Medical Center and her residency at Jacobi Medical Center.

Mario De La Rosa

Mario De La Rosa is a distinguished and Endowed in Health Equity University Professor at Florida International University. He is an internationally known researcher who has published numerous peer review publications focusing on Latino substance abuse, substance use as a risk factor for HIV/AIDS, violence, delinquency, and cross-cultural issues. He has been widely funded as a Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator from NIH, served on numerous NIH scientific review committees and peer-review scientific journals editorial boards, and is a past member of the NIMHD National Advisory Council. In 2022, De La Rosa was elected to the Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine of Florida (ASEMFL). He has won two awards for “Outstanding Research Contributions” at FIU. He is the recipient of the National Award of Excellence in Research by a Senior Investigator from the National Hispanic Science Network on Drug Abuse for his lifelong research efforts.

Ana Helena Jackson

Ana Jackson, Ph.D. (she/her) is chief evaluation and data strategy director at Blue Shield of California Foundation. An accomplished leader with a strong focus on health equity, she leads the Foundation’s evaluation and data strategy, centered around assuring that the Foundation and its grantees and stakeholders have access to the information they need to support systems change, advance equity, and assess learning and progress to improve health and end domestic violence.
Before joining the Foundation, Ana spent 11 years at the Center for Evaluation and Analytics at the Kaiser Permanente Care Management Institute. As director of evaluation, she led comprehensive program evaluations, applying a broad range of qualitative and quantitative methods. Ana has taught courses at University of California, Berkeley and San Francisco State University and held research positions spanning the areas of education, public policy, and health care.
Ana’s research interests include health equity measurement, evaluation of health equity and social needs interventions, benefits of a diverse health care workforce and evaluation of prevention and systems change efforts.
Jackson holds a bachelor's degree in Social Welfare and a Ph.D./Master of Public Policy from UC Berkeley.

Sarah Jane Javier

Sarah Javier, PhD (she/her) is a Core Investigator at the Center for Innovation to Implementation (Ci2i) at the VA Palo Alto Healthcare System and Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Javier’s primary areas of expertise lie at the intersection of health equity, implementation science, and chronic pain. She has over a decade of experience conducting intersectional health equity research and advocating for policies that provide advantage to historically marginalized groups. She is the recent recipient of a competitive Career Development Award from the Department of Veterans Affair’s Health Services Research & Development service. She is currently serving as a VA fellow on the NASEM Health Equity Roundtable. Prior to her work in the VA, Dr. Javier received her PhD in Health Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University, where she developed culturally tailored interventions as a member of the VCU Center for Cultural Experiences in Prevention. During her graduate school tenure, she acted as a graduate policy scholar for the American Psychological Association and consulted on federal health legislation aimed at reducing disparities in marginalized populations.

K. Aletha Maybank

Aletha Maybank, MD, MPH currently serves as the Chief Health Equity Officer and Senior Vice President for the American Medical Association (AMA) where she focuses on embedding health equity across all the work of the AMA and leading the Center for Health Equity. She joined the AMA in April 2019, as their inaugural Chief Health Equity Officer. Dr. Maybank previously served as Founding Director for the Center for Health Equity at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (2014) and the Office of Minority Health in the Suffolk County Department of Health Services (2006). She is a nationally recognized speaker, writer and advisor on issues related to health equity, the future of medicine, and public health impact.

Reginald Tucker-Seeley

Dr. Tucker-Seeley is currently the Vice-President of Health Equity at ZERO Prostate Cancer. In this role, he leads the development and implementation of ZERO’s health equity strategy to reduce racial/ethnic and place-based disparities in prostate cancer. Dr. Tucker-Seeley completed master and doctoral degrees in public health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (HSPH) and a postdoctoral fellowship in cancer prevention and control at HSPH and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI). His research has focused on social determinants of health across the life course, such as the association between the neighborhood environment and health behavior; and on individual-level socioeconomic determinants of multi-morbidity, mortality, self-rated physical, mental, and oral health. His research has also investigated the association of financial hardship with health across the cancer continuum from prevention to end-of-life care.
Dr. Tucker-Seeley has a longstanding interest in the impact of health policy and social policy on racial/ethnic minorities and across socioeconomic groups. He has experience working on local and state level health disparities policy, and he has developed, and taught courses focused on measuring and reporting health disparities. In 2017-2018, Dr. Tucker-Seeley was a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow with a placement in the United States Senate. Prior to joining ZERO, he was the inaugural holder of the Edward L. Schneider chair in gerontology and Assistant Professor in the Leonard Davis School of Gerontology at the University of Southern California (USC). Prior to joining USC, he was an Assistant Professor of Social and Behavioral Sciences at DFCI and HSPH.

In October 2023, The National Academies Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity hosted a public hybrid workshop in Oakland, CA on Exploring Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Health Equity Commitments and Approaches by Health Organization C-Suites. Speakers explored the history of diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) and health equity efforts and how they have been implemented by health organizations. A proceedings (a written summary of this event) of this workshop is available to the public for free download below.

The workshop was well received, and attendees expressed interest in learning more about DEI and health equity implementation and metrics for evaluation. In response to their feedback, the Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity hosted a one-day public webinar in December 2023 that explored lessons learned from health organization C-suite (executive level leadership) representatives on their approach to framing health equity as a business imperative, metrics for evaluating progress, and emerging best practices.

Meeting materials include speaker presentation slides and the attendee packet, which includes the agenda, the Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity roster, speaker and planning committee biosketches, and a compilation of background readings.
