Exploring Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Health Equity Commitments and Approaches by Health Organization C-Suites: A Workshop

Completed

Between 2020-2023, many health organizations hired diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and health equity officers for the C-suite in response to social injustices and demands for diversity and equity among executive level leadership. Although DEI staff were terminated at a much higher rate than other executives in 2022, many organizations recognize the value these positions have and are seeking best implementation practices.

This one-day public hybrid workshop will examine the successes and challenges of DEI and health equity C-suites by featuring presentations that will explore how DEI and health equity commitments are defined and supported to achieve internal and external goals.

Description

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene a public workshop to explore diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) and health equity commitments and approaches in healthcare organizations.

The planning committee will organize the workshop, select and invite diverse speakers, and moderate the discussions. The workshop will feature invited presentations and will explore dimensions of DEI and health equity commitments in healthcare organizations including how these commitments are defined and supported with respect to achieving internal (staff/workforce) and mission-related healthcare delivery and service goals (e.g., reducing health inequities, providing care), the role of organizational leadership in advancing DEI goals, emerging best practices for implementation, and potential metrics for measuring success. A proceedings of the workshop presentations and discussions will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
