APPENDIX D

Case Example Interview Questions

The following questions were asked during case example interviews.

  1. What is your state’s typical practice with respect to CRRB?
  2. In what circumstances and why, if any, do you deviate from your typical practice?
  3. How does your DOT make choices between competing reinforcement bar types (policies, life-cycle cost, service life design, … elaborate on answer to Survey Question 13)?
    1. For states that have policies, how were these policies developed (background assumptions, research, anecdotal findings, rules of thumb, etc.)?
    2. What assumptions or variables are considered in these decision-making processes (specifically with respect to life-cycle cost analyses and service life design where applicable)?
    3. In what way are the following items considered: member types, member locations, environmental exposure, traffic condition, expected service lives, member redundancy, and location of bridge relative to transportation network?
  4. How does the reinforcement bar type that is selected affect other aspects of the structural design?
    1. Basis for variation (yield strength, ultimate strength, modulus, weight, other)?
    2. What is varied (e.g., concrete material design or sizes)?
    3. How are they varied (e.g., specific values used)?
    4. How were these choices made (any background assumptions, research, anecdotal findings, rules of thumb, etc.)?
  5. Methods or specifications used for quality control of CRRB:
    1. What are the methods and/or specifications used (performance criteria, inspection, construction)?
    2. What was the rationale or process (research, anecdotal findings, rules of thumb, etc.), criteria, and assumptions used in selecting these procedures?
  6. What benefits (qualitative / quantitative) of CRRB has your agency experienced?
  7. Please elaborate on the challenges, if any (based on response to Survey Question 18), (qualitative / quantitative) of implementing CRRB in construction that your agency has experienced?
  8. What other challenges (e.g., in design, procurement), if any, (qualitative / quantitative) of implementing CRRB has your agency experienced?

  1. Please tell us about your state’s technology transfer, demonstration and/or pilot projects, or other activities related to implementation related to CRRB.
    1. What types of activities have been performed?
    2. What have the success or limitations of these efforts been (qualitatively and/or quantitatively)?
    3. Are written reports/documents available?
  2. What are your future plans for CRRB?
    1. Use?
    2. Any research or implementation efforts?
  3. What types of information or resources would be helpful for you with regards to use of CRRB?
