Update to Track System for 2026 Application Cycle

Update

The Gulf Research Program (GRP) has updated the track structure for the 2026 Early-Career Research Fellowship (ECRF) cycle to more clearly align with the guiding impact areas of the GRP while building on the focus and intent of the fellowship’s existing tracks. For the 2026 application cycle, the ECRF will offer the following tracks: Community Track, Energy Track, and Environment Track. The Education Research Track will not be offered for the 2026 cycle.

Next Generation of Leaders Connect and Collaborate at 2025 Gulf Scholars Program Conference

In March, the Gulf Research Program (GRP) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine held its third annual Gulf Scholars Program Conference on the University of South Alabama campus in Mobile, Alabama. Over 170 students, faculty and staff from the 24 Gulf Scholar Program campuses were in attendance, coming together to connect with, inspire, and learn from one another.

Successful First Peer Learning Meeting for Place-Based Education Program

Program News

In October 2024, six project directors and their evaluators met at the Tulane River and Coastal Center in New Orleans for the Gulf Research Programs first peer learning meeting. The 2022 Empowering K-8 Youth Through Place-Based Education grantees shared project outcomes and evaluation insights.

Fellow Spotlight: Engineering Success with the GRP’s Science Policy Fellowship

Program News

The Gulf Research Program spoke to 2023 Science Policy Fellow Gillian Palino following her year at the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council (TBRPC) host office. Upon completing her fellowship, Palino returned to the University of Tennessee, where she is finishing her Ph.D. She will join Mississippi State University as an assistant professor in fall 2025.
