Building Institutional Capacity for Engaged Research: A Workshop

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene a 1.5-day workshop to bring together experts to propose areas for coordination and capacity building to advance engaged research. The sessions will highlight bright spots at learning institutions and in burgeoning networks.

Description

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene a 1.5-day workshop to bring together experts to propose areas for coordination and capacity building to advance engaged research. The sessions will highlight bright spots at learning institutions and in burgeoning networks. The workshop will explore key issues such as:

  • Faculty incentives for engaged research and societal impact;
  • Workforce capacity for engaged research, boundary spanning, and knowledge mobilization, including training and career paths;
  • Institutional structures for engaged research, including university centers and think tanks;
  • Measures and metrics for research impact and public engagement;
  • Funders’ and professional societies’ role in supporting engaged research; and
  • Linking initiatives across sectors, including within and outside government.

A proceedings of the workshop, summarizing the presentations and discussions, will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
