Global Forced Migration and U.S. Resettlement

In progress

Any project, supported or not by a committee, that is currently being worked on or is considered active, and will have an end date.

Forced migration and its consequences are crucial issues at the global, national, and regional levels. The number of forced migrants has increased dramatically and is likely to continue to escalate for the foreseeable future. U.S. refugee and asylum policies are only infrequently based on scientific evidence about the immediate or longer-term consequences of migrant resettlement or exclusion. This study will review and assess the current state of knowledge regarding the resettlement and incorporation of forced migrants in the United States, identify knowledge gaps, propose an agenda for research and data collection, and discuss implications for policies and programs.

Description

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene an ad hoc committee of experts that will undertake a study to review and assess what is known about the integration of resettled refugees, asylees, and other types of forced migrants in the United States. Key focus areas will include:

  • trends and patterns in forced migration to the United States;
  • the state of integration of resettled refugees and asylees and other types of forced migrants in the United States along a range of indicators and outcome measures;
  • the effectiveness of government and civil society assistance on integration outcomes;
  • comparisons of experiences and outcomes for resettled refugees and asylees;
  • lessons learned from integration strategies in other countries;
  • the social, economic, political, and demographic impacts of refugee, asylee, and other forced migrant inflows on the United States at the national, state, and local levels.

The study will review the current state of knowledge, identify knowledge gaps, propose an agenda for research and data collection, and discuss implications for policies and programs.
