Health Risk Considerations for the Use of Unencapsulated Steel Slag: Release Webinar

The National Academies will host a webinar to discuss its recent report on health risk considerations for the use of unencapsulated steel slag, which is a rock-like material formed during the process of steel making. Much of the steel produced in the United Sates is made by melting scrap steel in an electric arc furnace (EAF). The slag generated by the EAF process has a variety of end uses which include using the material in a loose or unencapsulated form as ground cover material for residential landscaping. However, EAF slag can contain toxic metals, which can be hazardous to human and environmental health. The webinar is intended to provide the public with an opportunity to learn about the report's findings and recommendations and submit questions to members of the authoring committee.

The committee held an information-gathering session that will include presentations on how EAF steel slag products are manufactured and utilized and about EAF slag risk assessments from representatives of the National Slag Association, Steel Manufacturers Association, and American Iron and Steel Institute. The session included a presentation on the Leaching Environmental Assessment Framework (LEAF) and how it is being used to evaluate EAF slag, through research by EPA’s Office of Research and Development working with Vanderbilt University and Jacobs. LEAF is being used to evaluate materials for beneficial use (such as EAF slag) and to inform remedial action at contaminated sites.
