An Inclusive and Equitable Ocean: A Workshop

Completed

Any project, supported or not by a committee, that has not deposited records to the Records Office.

This workshop will be the first foundational theme workshop from the recent National Academies report, Cross-Cutting Themes for U.S. Contributions to the UN Ocean Decade. Participants from the public, private, and academic sectors will be invited to share best practices and identify areas of opportunity for further efforts.

Description

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene and conduct two public workshops (east and west coasts) to explore best practices for an inclusive and equitable ocean. Discussions at the workshops will include: sharing of stakeholder concerns regarding inclusion and equity; approaches for broader involvement of diverse communities in contributing to and determining needs for ocean science for sustainable development; resources and guidelines for furthering inclusion and equity; methodologies and metrics for implementing best practices; additional competencies needed in the decade(s) ahead; and examples of programs that have succeeded in, or aspired to address, various aspects of inclusion and equity. Participants in the workshops will be asked to offer suggestions for actions that incorporate inclusion and equity principles into the topical themes as part of the process for developing and implementing research programs for the Ocean Decade. Select volunteers from the workshop planning committee will also participate in the topical themes workshops to ensure integration of discussions from the foundational themes into the topical themes.
A Proceedings of a Workshop—In Brief will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines. The Brief will cover discussions at both workshops.
