Building on recommendations from the consensus report, Laying the Foundation for New and Advanced Nuclear Reactors in the United States, this workshop aims to explore pathways for new nuclear development in the United States. The world confronts an existential challenge in responding to climate change, resulting in an urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from all sectors of the economy. Nuclear power provides a significant portion of the world’s low-carbon electricity, and advanced nuclear technologies have the potential to be smaller, safer, less expensive to build, and better integrated with the modern grid. However, if the United States wants advanced nuclear reactors to play a role in its plans for decarbonization, there are many key challenges that must be overcome at the technical, economic, and regulatory levels.

This National Academies study will assess the future of new and advanced nuclear reactor technologies and identify the opportunities and barriers to commercialization.

We invite you to register to attend the open sessions of the fourth meeting of this study on Wednesday, May 26th, 11am – 1:30pm ET and Thursday, May 27th, 11am – 12:30pm ET. On Wednesday morning, the study committee will meet with the two DOE Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program winners: TerraPower and X-Energy. These reactor vendors will discuss their reactor technologies and business plans. The committee will also meet with each vendor separately in a closed session. On Thursday morning, the study committee will receive a briefing from the U.S. Department of Defense on Project Pele, a program aimed at building deployable nuclear reactors for remote operating bases.

This virtual meeting will explore the issues that face nuclear power plant construction both domestically and abroad, with a focus on lesson learned. The committee will hear from experts in construction, project management, and regulation. Discussion topics will include strategies for complex project management, new digital tools for streamlined construction, and past nuclear power plant construction oversights. The committee thanks the National Academy of Construction for helping plan this event.

Nuclear reactors provide carbon-free energy, and advanced nuclear technologies could play an important role in moving the United States towards a zero-carbon future. Next-generation nuclear reactors have the potential to be smaller, safer, less expensive to build, and better integrated with the modern grid. However, the technical, economic, and regulatory outlook for these technologies remains uncertain. This study will assess the future of new and advanced nuclear reactor technologies and identify the opportunities and barriers to commercialization. In this first meeting, the committee will strategize in closed session on how to approach their Statement of Task, and there will be a session open to the public on December 17 from 1:00 - 5:15 PM.
