Frontiers of Big Data, Modeling, and Simulation in Urban Sustainability - A Workshop

Completed

Data, modeling, and simulations are critical to planning for and maintaining sustainable communities. The National Academies organized a workshop and webcast in January 2019 that brought together an interdisciplinary network of practitioners, business leaders, academics, and policy makers using data for urban sustainability. The workshop focused on identifying areas where cities can partner with the scientific community to address challenges related to air and water quality, transportation and physical infrastructure, and sustainable inclusive communities.

This workshop had a follow-on webinar series.

Description

A National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine-appointed ad hoc committee will plan and organize a workshop to explore the frontiers of big data, modeling, and simulation in urban sustainability. This workshop will bring together leading urban sustainability researchers, data scientists, statisticians, computer scientists, mathematicians, and other stakeholders to:

  • Highlight urban sustainability research efforts and programs underway, including research into air quality, water management, waste disposal, and social equity;
  • Discuss challenges and opportunities to applying big data, modeling, and simulation to advance urban sustainability research;
  • Discuss promising urban sustainability research questions that improved use of big data, modeling, and simulation can help address; and
  • Explore relevant case studies of organizations, sectors, or application domains that have addressed similar big data, modeling, and simulation issues, and discuss how these experiences can help advance data-driven urban sustainability science in the future.

The workshop will be webcast live and recorded, and one or more rapporteur(s) will prepare a “Proceedings of a Workshop” document to summarize the presentations and discussions that occurred during the workshop.
