Workplace Safety in Hybrid Federal Laboratories: A Workshop

Completed

Description

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will bring together invited industry, academic, and government professionals, who are experts in various aspects of the following issues:

· How has the shift to a hybrid workplace at federal laboratories impacted safe work practices in laboratory settings, how has this shift affected the safety culture, and what efforts are underway to identify and manage these historic shifts?

· How effective is remote mentorship compared to more direct shoulder-to-shoulder, in-person approaches regarding safety?

· What effect is pandemic turnover having on the safety culture and the institutional knowledge of best practices?

· Are there strategies to include the soft interactions with colleagues that are often lost in virtual environments?

· What efforts are currently underway to address or account for this historic shift to hybrid working?

· What are the best practices for safety oversight and training in a hybrid workplace?

· What are the best operating procedures for working safely in a hybrid workplace?

The virtual workshop should consider incorporating inputs related to trends in laboratory safety from before, during, and after COVID-19.

The overall goal is to:

· Share perspectives as to whether the shift to hybrid working mode has affected operational safety practices and the overall safety culture in federal laboratories; and

· Share perspectives on integrating safe work practices in a high-quality, fast-paced research environment operating in hybrid mode.
