Description
A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene a one-day workshop on combating health misinformation through health literacy. The planning committee will organize and conduct the one-day public workshop, featuring invited presentations and moderated discussion on health literacy as a tool to combat health misinformation. The workshop will explore the challenges of the proliferation of health and medical misinformation, as well as current issues and their impact on global population health (i.e., vaccine hesitancy/refusal). The workshop discussions will examine the evidence base for successfully countering health misinformation, including
- the role of functional, communicative, and critical health literacy in an individual’s ability to discern health information from misinformation as well as decision-making skills; and
- the role of health professionals/systems and the broader public health arena in addressing online misinformation by providing health literate information to the public.
Presentations and discussions may also examine opportunities for collaboration between public health professionals and
- the technology industry, to fight the spread of health misinformation online.
- community leaders, to address mistrust and improve health outcomes among historically marginalized communities, refugee communities, and/or immigrant communities.
The planning committee will define specific topics to be addressed, develop the agenda, select and invite speakers and other participants, and moderate the discussions. A proceedings of the presentations and discussions at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
