The Roles of Trust and Health Literacy in Achieving Health Equity: A Workshop Series

Completed

Any project, supported or not by a committee, that has not deposited records to the Records Office.

The Roundtable on Health Literacy will convene a series of 3 mini-workshops to explore how using health literacy best practices might impact trust in health institutions, and how that, in turn, might positively impact health equity. Each of the three sessions will focus on a different context: (1) clinical settings, (2) public health institutions, and (3) community organizations.

Description

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene a series of three virtual, public, workshops to explore how employing health literacy principles might contribute to improving trust in health institutions, and thereby to addressing health inequities. Each of the three workshops will focus on the role of health literacy and trust in a particular setting:

  • Clinical settings
  • Public health institutions
  • Community organizations

The workshops will feature invited panelists and moderated discussion to explore topics including:

  • Challenges that mistrust presents to health outcomes and health equity
  • Measuring trust
  • Trust as a measure of quality care
  • Health literacy as a potential tool for improving trust, and thereby health equity
  • Steps and best practices in organizational health literacy
  • Implementation science perspective on messaging and trust

The planning committee will define specific topics to be addressed, develop the agenda, select and invite speakers and other participants, and moderate the discussions. Three separate Proceedings—in Brief products, covering the presentations and discussions of each workshop, will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
