Engaging Community Health Workers/Youth Ambassadors to Improve Health Literacy: A Workshop

This workshop will explore the use of community health workers/youth ambassadors in promoting health literacy in the community. Held in observation of National Minority Health Month, this workshop will feature grantees of the Office of Minority Health's grant programs Advancing Health Literacy to Enhance Equitable Community Responses to COVID-19 and the National Infrastructure for Mitigating the Impact of COVID-19 within Racial and Ethnic Minority Communities. Representatives will discuss lessons learned implementing health literacy approaches in youth ambassadors programs.

Description

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in collaboration with the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) will convene a 90-minute public workshop to explore the use of community health workers/youth ambassadors in promoting health literacy in the community. The workshop will be held during National Minority Health Month and will feature invited panelists and moderated discussion to explore:

  1. The evidence-base supporting community health worker/youth ambassador programs
  2. Different health literacy approaches used in implementing community health/youth ambassador programs
  3. Lessons learned implementing community health worker/youth ambassador programs under the OMH Advancing Health Literacy to Enhance Equitable Community Responses to COVID-19 and the National Infrastructure for Mitigating the Impact of COVID-19 within Racial and Ethnic Minority Communities grant programs


The planning committee will define specific topics to be addressed, develop the agenda, select and invite speakers and other participants, and moderate the discussions. A Proceedings in Brief of the presentations and discussions at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
