Challenges and Opportunities for Precision and Personalized Nutrition: A Workshop

Completed

The Food Forum hosted a series of three virtual workshops that explored potential challenges and opportunities in the application of precision and personalized nutrition approaches to optimize dietary guidance and improve nutritional status.

Description

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will plan and convene a public workshop that will explore potential challenges and opportunities in the application of precision and personalized nutrition approaches to optimize dietary guidance and improve nutritional status. Broadly, the workshop sessions will include discussions about the state of the evidence on precision and personalized nutrition, including research gaps, implementation science, and policy challenges.
Workshop presenters will discuss ways to define precision and personalized nutrition, and describe how different sources of individual variability (such as genetics, food behavior, and environmental exposures) may affect these definitions and responses to a precision nutrition approach. Workshop presentations may also include topics such as limitations and opportunities for current and new research methodologies; innovations and challenges in the public and private sector; implications for food science; equitable access to precision and personalized nutrition; and its potential impact on future dietary guidance. Case studies may be presented in the workshop to illustrate applications of new research methodologies and precision and personalized nutrition in clinical settings.
The planning committee will define the specific topics to be addressed, develop the workshop agenda, and select and invite speakers and discussants. A proceedings of a workshop---in brief and full proceedings summarizing all presentations will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
